Threats force Assam to tighten security

The Assam government has deployed all available forces throughout the state following militants' threats to disrupt tomorrow's Independence Day celebrations.

Official sources today said that army helicopters had also been pressed into service to carry out surveillance of roads and railways in the state.

Seven insurgent groups, including the banned United Liberation Front of Asom and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, have called for a region-wide bandh from midnight tonight and urged the people to boycott all official functions.

The railways have taken all precautionary measures following a series of bomb blasts during the past week in different parts of the state. Night train services have been suspended till tomorrow.

Security measures were tightened at oil installations and major bridges, and patrolling intensified on national highways and other roads in the state.
