E-Mail this report to a friend

The main opposition party in Goa, the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced its candidates for both the constituencies of Panaji and Marmugao, while the Congress still waits for Delhi to clear its list. The newly-floated Nationalist Congress Party has announced its candidate for Marmugao.

The state Congress leaders met yesterday and have forwarded the name of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party leader Ramakant Khalap for the Panaji seat, after he expressed his willingness to join the Congress and contest on its symbol.

The other seat of Marmugao has three contenders, including General Sunit Rodriques, retired chief of army staff, Uday Bhendre, leading Konkani writer, journalist and former Congress Member of the Legislative Assembly and Joaquim Alemao, brother of Churchill Alemao.

Meanwhile, former chief minister Wilfred D'Souza, who recently joined the NCP has made it known that he is its official candidate from Mormugao. The BJP is fielding Sripad Naik (Panaji) and Ramakant Angley (Marmugao).
