CPI, PWP break away from NCP-led front

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Nationalist Congress Party's endeavour to cobble up a a third front in Maharashtra today suffered a setback with two Left Front constituents - the Communist Party of India (Maharashtra) and the Peasants and Workers' Party - deciding to opt out of the Sharad Pawar-led front.

The two parties today also released a list of constituencies from where they will field common candidates.

With the exit of the CPI and the PWP, the Sharad Pawar-led front is now left only with the Republican Party of India (Athawale), the Samajwadi Party, the Janata Dal (secular) and the Swatantra Bharat Party.

The CPI and the PWP now hope to join hands with the CPI-M, which had all along opposed the idea of the Left parties joining the Sharad Pawar-led front.

Addressing mediapersons today, the CPI secretary, Govind Pansare and the PWP secretary, N D Patil, said their talks with the NCP failed as Pawar wanted to accommodate independent ministers supporting the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance as well as those who had defected.
