57 feared killed in MP as bus falls into swollen river

E-Mail this report to a friend

All the 57 passengers travelling in a Junnardeo-Nagpur bus of the Madhya Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation were feared drowned today when the vehicle fell into a swollen river near Saunsar in Chhindwara district, 60 km from Nagpur.

A police official at Saunsar police station said one body was recovered and efforts were being made to remove the wreckage of the bus. He said there was no possibility of there being any survivors.

Top officials, including the Chhindwara collector, have rushed to the site of the accident.

Sources said the bus left Junnardeo at 5 am and was scheduled to reach Nagpur at 10 am.

It had stopped near the Jaam river bridge for the flash flood to recede. After a while the driver, thinking that it was safe, tried to cross the bridge. But while letting another vehicle, approaching from the opposite side, pass the bus plunged into the river.
