Noted theatre and television personality Mohan Gokhale, who shot into fame with the television serial Mr Yogi, passed away in Madras this morning. He was in his early forties and is survived by his actress wife Shubhangi Sanghvi.

Gokhale, who was in Madras shooting for Kamal Hassan's new film Hey Ram, passed away in his sleep, family sources said. Currently he was working in several tele-serials including Aashirvad, Alpaviram, and Zanjeerein.

He made his television debut in Shwetambara, the first sponsored Marathi teleserial, 15 years ago. He has acted in many films in Marathi and Hindi, including Hech Maze Maher opposite Reema Lagoo and Mirch Masala with Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil.

Gokhale began his career as a theatre artiste in Pune while still in college. He acted in experimental and commercial plays with equal ease.

His association with Marathi films began with noted film director Rajdutt's film Mafhi Cha Sakshidar based on the sensational Joshi Abhayankar murder in Pune.

His other notable film with Rajdutt was Aaj Zale Muksta Mee opposite Madhu Kambikar.

Recalling his association with the actor, Rajdutt said Gokhale was an intellectual artiste and a very sensitive actor who thoroughly understood the medium of cinema. He was an 'inward-looking' personality, he added.

Gokhale's mortal remains will be taken to Pune via Bombay by Kamal Hassan this evening.
