Pakistan says India's political turmoil 'an internal affair'

Following the collapse of India's Bharatiya Janata Party-led government, Pakistan today said it remained committed to negotiations regardless of who is in power.

Today's confidence vote that brought down Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government "was an internal affair of India's" a Pakistani foreign ministry statement said.

However, the statement added that "Pakistan desires political stability in the region." But regardless of who is in power, the foreign ministry said, "Pakistan will pursue the dialogue process with India irrespective of the nature of the government in New Delhi.

"Pakistan remains committed to the implementation of the Lahore declaration in letter and spirit," it said.

"It is only through dialogue that outstanding problems, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir can be resolved and peace and security strengthened in the region," the statement said.
