Left demands confidence vote

The Left parties today said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee should seek a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha after his coalition government was reduced to a minority following withdrawal of support to it by the AIADMK.

CPI-M leader Biplab Dasgupta said since the BJP-led government assumed power only after receiving the formal support letter from AIADMK supremo J Jayalalita, it was duty-bound to seek a vote of confidence after it withdrew support.

CPI secretary D Raja said the prime minister has the moral responsibility to seek the confidence of the House. To a question as to which formation his party would support to form an alternative government, Dasgupta said it will be purely issue-based support and that too from outside.

On the issue of supporting a Congress-led government, Raja said: ''Our stand is clear. We have made it known several times and there is no change. We will not be part of any coalition government,'' he added.
