E-Mail this report to a friend

Renowned Nadaswaram exponent Sheikh Chinna Moulana died at his residence in Sri Rangam, near Tiruchirapalli, early today following a brief illness.

He was 75. He is survived by a son and daughter, both Nadaswaram Vidwans.

The veteran Carnatic musician had been conferred the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi award by the Madras-based Music Academy in December last year in recognition of his life-long contribution to the art.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Sheikh Chinna Moulana, along with his family members, had settled decades ago on the banks of the river Cauvery in the island of Sri Rangam, the abode of Lord Ranganatha.

He had established the Sarada Vidyalaya to teach the art of playing Nadaswaram, a difficult wind instrument, to students free of cost.

His mortal remains were laid to rest at Tiruvanakkavil, near Sri Rangam, this evening.
