China says Agni-II test may spark arms race

E-Mail this report to a friend

China today criticised India for test-firing the Agni-II missile. Warning that the test could set off another arms race in the region, it urged New Delhi to keep the peace with Pakistan.

By conducting the missile test yesterday, the Chinese foreign ministry said India violated a UN Security Council resolution that called on it to stop developing nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them.

This could set off another round of the arms race in South Asia, the ministry said. "China expresses its regret and concern over this," it said in a prepared statement.

The statement noted that India and Pakistan have been trying to repair relations and build trust.

The Chinese hoped the two countries would "continue to use patient, sincere and meaningful dialogue to peacefully resolve disputes and problems".
