General Karamat denies rumours about martial lawPakistan army chief General Jehangir Karamat has denied that he was 'on the brink of declaring martial law in the country,' following widespread charges of corruption against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief and a severe economic crisis in Pakistan. General Karamat was commenting on a report in The Observer, saying that Sharief had siphoned huge amount of foreign exchange abroad. He was of the view that the people spreading such rumours were enemies of Pakistan. ''They should sometimes also report some positive things about Pakistan,'' he said. Meanwhile, former interior minister Naseerullah Babar has asked President Rafiq Tarar to hold an enquiry into the charges that Sharief had defaulted on payment to 31 financial institutions. A number of leaders have demanded an immediate enquiry on charges of corruption against the prime minister and urged the president to action against him. UNI
