Taslima likely to seek bail

E-Mail this report to a friend

Controversial author Taslima Nasreen may apply for bail before a higher Bangladeshi court to avoid arrest, ordered by a magistrate for offending the sentiments of Muslims.

Nasreen discussed the warrant with her lawyers, a family member said.

The 36-year-old writer also faces death threats from Islamic extremists.

The warrant was revived after a Dhaka resident, Joynul Abedin, renewed a complaint that Nasreen attacked Islam in her book Nirbachitya column (Selected columns), a compilation of her newspaper writings.

The magistrate also ordered Nasreen's property to be confiscated as punishment for failing to appear in court.

The police said their search for the author has not yet yielded any result.
