Top company executive linked to Dawood

V Balasubramanian, president of a leading private-sector company, had connections with Dubai-based gangster Dawood Ibrahim, Delhi's Additional Commissioner of Police Amod Kant told reporters today.

The official came into contact with Dawood when the gangster was extorting money from leading industrial houses, Kant said.

But there is no evidence to suggest the company knew of Balasubramanian's links, he added.

Kant said officials of the Delhi police, the Central Bureau of Investigation, and the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at the residential and office premises of Balasubramanian last night and seized several documents and floppies.

But he refused to disclose their contents, saying officials are still studying them.

The searches were conducted on court orders after the arrest of former Congress politician and alleged Dawood aide Romesh Sharma, following a complaint that Sharma had fraudulently taken possession of a helicopter from one Suresh Rao.

Papers relating to the helicopter deal were found with Balasubramanian.

Police and other agencies have so far registered 14 cases against Sharma.
