Gangster arrested for murder of apparel superstore owner

In a major breakthrough, the Bombay police have arrested one of the accused in the sensational shooting of Bharat Shah, owner of the well-known Roopam Stores, even as the business community heaved a sigh of relief.

According to sources, Ismail Yusuf Sheikh, owing allegiance to the Chhota Shakeel gang, was arrested by Assistant Commissioner of Police Pradip Sawant with assistance from special squad of police from an undisclosed place in Bombay after they got information about his hideout. He was taken in for interrogation where he revealed to the police the names of his associates involved in the heinous crime with him.

Sheikh had shot Bharat Shah on October 8 near Juma Masjid at Crawford Market, in south Bombay, in the late evening outside a telephone booth. He confessed that they had been keeping a close watch on the businessman for quiet some time and were following him where ever he went. On the said say, they got their chance after Shah came out of a book store and went to a public telephone booth to make a call. There he was shot from a close range, after which Sheikh and his aides fled in a taxi.

The police have recovered a 9mm Chinese made pistol from Sheikh. Further investigations in the case are on, they added.
