The police today fired in the air to stop booth-capturing by armed men at a polling station in Bairiya village under Sheohar assembly constituency. Sheohar is among four assembly constituencies where byelections were held in Bihar today.

Four people were arrested and two guns and 13 live cartridges were seized from them as they were about to disrupt the poll process, the police said.

Two suspected Rashtriya Janata Dal supporters, who opened fire at a polling booth in Chiknouta village to threaten voters, were also arrested. The activists also reportedly opened fire in Basaria village to intimidate scheduled caste voters, the police said.

Three others were also nabbed for various offences while the police seized three heavy-duty vehicles and a motorcycle from some people for violating poll regulations.

State Samata Party president Raghunath Jha and RJD nominee Rana Rathnakar Singh are engaged in a direct contest in Sheohar.
