E-Mail this report to a friend

Nishant Bharadwaj (20), the Rajasthan University student whose self-immolation attempt in Jaipur on Monday against delay in announcing results led to resignation of Vice-Chancellor V I Rajagopal, died at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Thursday evening.

Bharadwaj, an MA student, was brought to New Delhi from Jaipur by a special plane by the Rajasthan government two days ago.

He had doused kerosene and set himself afire when, after leading a group of students to submit a memorandum to the vice-chancellor, he was not given permission to meet him.

Bharadwaj had stated that he was peeved over the denial of appointment by the vice-chancellor.

The students were on a relay hunger strike demanding early declaration of results.

Bharadwaj was rushed to hospital with third degree burns, and later brought to Delhi.

Rajagopal resigned soon after the incident.

Rajasthan Governor, Justice N L Tibrewal, chancellor of Rajasthan University who is in the capital, went to the hospital to condole the student's death.

The governor has also ordered an inquiry into the death and delay in announcing the results.
