US ambassador to return to New Delhi

C K Arora in Washington

US Ambassador to India Richard Celeste will return to his post in New Delhi ''very soon,'' announced US state department spokesman James Rubin. However, US Ambassador to Pakistan Thomas Simons will not be recalled in protest against Islamabad's nuclear tests, Rubin added.

Celeste, who was in the US for an official assignment at the time of India's nuclear tests on May 11 and 13, was asked to stay on instead of returning to his post in New Delhi as a sign of protest against the Indian tests.

Meanwhile, the planned visit by King Carl XVI and Queen Silvia of Sweden to Pakistan next March has been called off in protest.

Foreign Minister Lena Hjelm-Wallen said the decision, plus a formal protest over the tests, was conveyed to the Pakistan ambassador in Stockholm.
