G-8 has spared India, says Ayub Khan

Pakistan's Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan has expressed dissatisfaction at the G-8 summit's statement that does not impose collective sanctions against India and does not, in his country's view, adequately condemn nuclear tests by India.

But Khan avoided an answer when the British Broadcasting Corporation asked him last night what steps Pakistan expects against India to punish it for its nuclear tests. ''They have talked of sanctions,'' he said.

Two days ago, Khan had claimed that his country was very close to exploding a nuclear device. When asked to substantiate that claim, he replied, ''It was like a lock and key,'' implying that Pakistan can do it whenever it decides to.

The minister repeated his complaint that European countries did not do anything to stop India from exploding nuclear devices.
