Banatwalla against world body debating Babri mosque

India Union Muslim League president G M Banatwalla today appealed to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to urge the World Archaeology Congress in Croatia not to take up any discussion on the 'highly sensitive and controversial' dispute regarding the Babri mosque.

He has requested the prime minister to take immediate action as the WAC may already be in session.

In his letter to the prime minister, Banatwalla said it was a matter of serious concern that the WAC had listed a discussion on the Babri mosque in one of its six sessions.

The subject has serious communal overtones, he said. ''The dispute is also pending before our law courts. Under the circumstances, it will be imprudent and highly objectionable for a world body to take up a discussion on the most controversial dispute before our law courts. This is especially so when the media reports indicate that the world meet is expected to be dominated by scholars of one set of opinion. This would also lead to a highly partisan approach to the subject.''
