AIADMK members walk out from RS over proposal on spreading Hindi

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam walked out of the Rajya Sabha today protesting against a suggestion by Samajwadi Party member Janeshwar Mishra that steps should be taken to promote the spread of Hindi as a national language all over the country.

Mishra had made the suggestion while welcoming the government's proposal to grant 18 Indian languages official status.

AIADMK members R Margabandhu, Thalavai Sundaram, O S Maniam and S Niraikulathaan were soon on their feet demanding that the assurance given to the southern states on continuance of English must be honoured.

Vayalar Ravi (Congress) said the status of English as a link language with the south should not be changed.

After AIADMK members walked out, Mishra said he was sorry if he had hurt the sentiments of some members of the House.
