Police persuade deported Punjab terrorist to surrenderDeported from Canada and alienated from his friends and relatives, Harinder Singh Gill alias Boni, a member of the Khalistan National Army surrendered before the police in Amritsar on Monday. Boni, deported from Canada in January after spending 18 months in a prison in that country, was persuaded by his relatives to give up the path of militancy and join the mainstream. The police too played its part by assuring his parents that no harm would come to him if he surrendered. Giving this information, Amritsar Senior Superintendent of Police Paramjit Singh Gill said the police had contacted Boni's parents who reside in the Bhagtanwala locality of the city on receiving information that he had returned to India in January. After a great deal of assurances, Boni finally surrendered yesterday, he added. Giving further details, Gill said Boni had spent 18 months in a prison in Canada for his involvement in a murder case. He, along with another top-ranking KNA militant, Gurdev Singh Pappi, managed to escape to Canada in 1991 after their outfit lost some of its frontline leaders, he added. Boni, who joined the KNA in 1989 during his college days in Amritsar, was involved in six cases, the SSP said. These cases included several shootouts in the city in which one person was killed and many others injured, Gill said. Gill said the accused had been sent to the central jail here after the completion of judicial formalities. UNI
