Moopanar quits as TMC president
In a dramatic move, Tamil Maanila Congress
president G K Moopanar today announced his decision to
resign from the post owning moral responsibility for the party's
poor showing in the general election.
Talking to newspersons at the party headquarters, Sathyamoorthy
Bhavan in Madras, he said he would submit his resignation to the TMC
executive at the party's annual conference at Thanjavur on April
Moopanar said the resignations of the entire executive
submitted to him earlier as also of other office-bearers would be
discussed by the executive at the conference.
The office-bearers had resigned en masse to enable Moopanar
to reconstitute it following the defeat of 17 of the 20 TMC
candidates in the election.

Desam Party during the confidence motion moved by Prime Minister A B
Vajpayee, Moopanar said it was for the United Front core committee
to examine the political compulsions which made the constituents take a different stand.
On the possibility of the TMC returning to the Congress fold,
Moopanar said there was a lot of confusion over the matter. However,
it was for the Congress leadership to decide on the issue and
then we will decide, he added.
Asked about the possibility of a political polarisation in the
state he said there was no need for it now.
