Stone-crushing units face closure in Krishna, Guntur districts

A number of stone-crushing units in Krishna and Guntur districts of Andhra Pradesh are facing closure for failing to install pollution control equipment by March 31, the deadline set by the pollution control authorities.

All the 120 units -- 60 in each district -- were served with notices a year ago, directing them to shift their units from the national highways and install the pollution control equipment.

A few units have complied with the order and installed the required equipment like a screen for segregation of stones, dust-carrying conveyor belt, a separate dust chamber and sprinklers. Some other units have implemented the measures only partially.

However, action would be initiated only against those units which had failed to install any equipment, according to environmental engineer and Pollution Control Board regional office in charge K S A Krishna.

He said the Board was empowered to order the closure of units which failed to adopt pollution control measures under Section 31(A) of the Amended Air Act. The Board would cut power and water supply to the units causing pollution as per the act, he added.
