BJP MLA elected Gujarat speaker

Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Dhirubhai Shah was on Thursday unanimously elected speaker of the 10th Vidhan Sabha in Gujarat.

His name was proposed by Industry Minister Suresh Mehta. There was no other candidate for the post.

Pro-tem Speaker Daulat Desai declared Shah elected unanimously.

Later, Mehta and leader of Opposition Amarsinh Chaudhary escorted Shah to the speaker's podium. In his brief address, the new speaker sought the co-operation of the House, in which as many as 66 members are first-timers.

Shah, himself a novice in the House, was elected on a BJP ticket from Rapar in Kutch district. He is the 16th speaker of the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha.
