Fasting Madiga leader shifted to hospital, sporadic violence breaks out in AP

Sporadic violence broke out in different parts of Andhra Pradesh following the shifting of the fasting Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti leader Manda Krishna Madiga to a hospital in Hyderabad early today.

In a pre-dawn operation, police shifted Krishna to the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences from the venue of the fast in Secunderabad.

He has been on an indefinite fast for the last 13 days demanding immediate implementation of the categorisation of dalits four groups.

Police Commissioner R P Singh said that tear gas and fire extinguishers were used in the pre-dawn swoop as MRPS activists threw kerosene bottles at the police.

Five policemen and three MRPS activists were injured in the incident and at least 15 MRPS activists were arrested by the police, he added.

The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation authorities have withdrawn buses from several routes in Hyderabad as a precautionary measure following the shifting of Krishna to hospital.

Meanwhile, the MRPS has given a call for a state-wide strike on June 24 to protest against the state government's alleged failure to implement the categorisation of dalits.
