An excellent analysis. It is refreshing to read something sensible and postive on Rediff for a change, given the largely senile and negative articles that appear on it.

The author correctly states that the BJP has forced Pakistan to play the game by our rules, something the earlier governments could not do -- either due to a lack of will or some other reason.Keep up the good work, Mr Shenoy.

TVRS is like a breath of fresh air after all the rubbish by Diwanji. Great going, TVRS. Don't stop now.

This is a general comment regarding the nuclear tamashathat has been going on for the last few weeks. The following points have been proved:

*The BJP is as fallible as all the other Indian parties. Although the Congress and others are a corrupt lot, they have not pushed the country into such an insecure position. By testing the nukes, the BJP has actually reduced the existing levels of security in the subcontinent, tarnished whatever small ties with its neighbours and invoked the wrath of the world.

The argument that China and Pakistan are always going to be anti-India is true, but now the situation is even worse. The use of nuclear deterrence only makes the situation even more volatile. If there was a war using nuclear weapons, it would have devastating effects for the whole of the humanity. Mr Advani is getting us pretty close to it.

The only sane observation that can be made from these events is that the BJP is solely interested in winning an outright majority in the next polls apathetic to the fact that it has placed India in a very dangerous position. Indians abroad having renewed pride and all that is nonsense... I think we should be proud when our scientists make inroads into making easier lives for Indians in India. Innovation in the field of weapons of mass destruction DO NOT make India a better place to live. It makes India a more dangerous place for its citizens. Pakistan and China will only increase their adventure on our borders. The BJP has taken the country to the brink of disaster with its narrowminded ambitions. I think it's time we woke up from this dream before it turns into a nightmare.

*The US is as hypocritical as they have ever been. They reek of double standards. There's no point wasting bytes talking about them.

As always, an excellent report. Kudos to Mr Shenoy. He always has a point to make. He describes it very cogently. His summation is at the best: "Nobody in Delhi can say so openly, but the after-effects of Pokhran II have made Pakistan an American headache, not ours!" Sounds very logical. Keep it up.
