Gujral not a registered voter from Jalandhar, claims rival

Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, the Janata Dal candidate from Jalandhar, is not a registered voter in the constituency, his Congress rival Umrao Singh said today.

Gujral, he said, was registered as a voter in Patna, from where he contested the 1991 Lok Sabha election. Gujral's election was countermanded on rigging charges in the Patna constituency.

Questioning Gujral's claim of belonging to Jalandhar, he asked if that was the case, why had he sold his ancestral house in the city.

Turning on the the Akali Dal-Bharaitya Janata Party government, Umrao Singh said the government should publish a white paper on Punjab's loan waiver.

Lashing out at the Akalis, the Congress leader alleged that many Akali ministers and MLAs have a militant background. A case under TADA was registered against Ajit Singh Kuhar, now a minister, during Surjit Singh Barnala's regime, Umrao Singh pointed out.

He also charged the chief minister with having diverted funds meant to provide small dams against water in the Mand area of the Sultanpur Lodhi in Kapurthala district to the water-logged areas of Muktsar and Malout, which fall under the Faridkot constituency, from where his son Sukhbir Singh Badal is a candidate.
