Who's afraid of the press, asks Sonia

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Sonia Gandhi today denied she was afraid of the press though she made no move to meet journalists at the party's iftaar gathering.

"I am not afraid of the press," Gandhi said, when a reporter asked her to react to the Bharatiya Janata Party charge that she was apprehensive of journalists. Gandhi, who was the star attraction at the iftaar gathering, left quickly afterwards, claiming she had various other engagements. She spent barely 15 minutes there, spending most of her time talking to the few diplomats present.

When the journalist cornered her and asked her to react to the charge, she said the paucity of time did not allow her to comment further on the BJP accusations. However, she would find appropriate time to rebut all that the BJP has said against her, she added.

Congress chief Sitaram Kesri diplomatically ducked all probing questions directed at him. But asked to explain the sudden 'change of attitude' by senior Janata Dal member and former prime minister V P Singh regarding Sonia, Kesri quickly said Singh had read the writing on the wall.
