Split in AGP

A division in the Asom Gana Parishad is on the cards with rebel and former Assam home minister Bhrigu Kumar Phukan resolving to form a new party.

"In all possibility the name of the party will be the Asom Jatiya Sanmalani," AGP legislator and senior rebel leader Brindabon Goswami said.

The rebels, under the banner of regional politics protection prepartory committee, had held a political convention before deciding to form the party. About 700 AGP activists from all over the state were present. They lambasted the AGP for its 'misrule' in the state.

The convention was attended by the Autonomous State Demand Committee, Communist Party of India-ML, People's Democratic Front and the Assam People's Front.

Most of the leaders of the erstwhile Natun Assom Gana Parishad also attended the meeting.
