BJP will field 375 candidates

The Bharatiya Janata Party issued its second list of 100 candidates from 16 states on Wednesday night, taking the total number of its nominees for the general election to 305.

The BJP will field 375 candidates, party general secretary Pramod Mahajan said in New Delhii on Wednesday evening. The BJP's allies are likely to field around 160 candidates.

The final list of 70 candidates and the BJP's nominees for the Gujarat assembly election will be finalised on Thursday next, January 29, by the party's central election committee.

Prominent in Wednesday's list are former finance minister Jaswant Singh from Chittorgarh, Congress rebel P Rangarajan Kumaramangalam from Tiruchirapalli, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kailash Joshi from Raigarh, former deputy Lok Sabha speaker S Mallikarjunaiah from Tumkur in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh unit president Bandaru Dattatreya from Secunderabad, Orissa unit president Juel Oram from Sundargarh, Gopinath Gajpati from Berhampur, RJD rebel Som Pal from Baghpat, Ram Dhan from Lal Ganj, Virendra Verma from Kairana, West Bengal unit president Tapan Sikdar from Dum Dum and Rajasthan unit president R S Kaushal from Kota.

Prem Dhumal, the party's Himachal unit president, has been shifted from the Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency to contest the state assembly election from Bumsen. His place will be taken by Suresh Chandel.
