Jalappa quits Union Cabinet

Textile Minister R L Jalappa today resigned from the Union Cabinet, following his decision to quit the Janata Dal and join the Congress.

Jalappa submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral after attending the Cabinet meeting. He met Congress president Sitaram Kesri earlier, expressing his wish to join the Congress. He also stated that he wished to be in national politics, thereby staking his claim for the Chikkaballapur seat.

The Congress was also seeking a backward class leader to contain the erosion of its votes after former chief minister S Bangarappa floated his Karnataka Vikas Party.

The 73-year-old leader, hailing from the backward Idiga community, is a co-operation activist who climbed up the political ladder starting as a co-operative bank director.
