AIADMK to contest 23 seats

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will contest 23 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, leaving the rest for the Bharatiya Janata Party and its other allies.

Announcing this, AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister J Jayalalitha said the allies -- the BJP, Marumalarchi DMK and Pattali Makkal Katchi -- would contest five seats each.

It was earlier decided that the BJP would contest only four seats. The fifth seat is Tiruchirappalli.

The Janata party and the newly-formed Tamizhaga Rajiv Congress of Vazhapadi K Ramamurthy would contest one seat each.

The seat-sharing talks with the allies were held in a cordial atmosphere and there was no hitch, Jayalalitha said.

She said some of the constituents expected a larger share of the seats, but they could not be accommodated.
