Ruling alliance announce four candidates

The ruling four-party alliance -- of the Asom Gana Parishad, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India-Marxist and United Peoples Party of Assam -- has announced its candidates for four constituencies, and offered one seat to the Janata Dal out of the 14 seats in Assam.

After a meeting of the alliance partners, AGP president and Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said CPI-M MP Udhab Barman and Nurul Huda would contest the election from Barpeta and Silchar constituencies respectively.

The CPI candidate and former assembly deputy speaker Giasuddin Ahmed would fight from Dhubri.

The meeting also decided to support Independent candidate Aluin Teorn for the Diphu (ST) seat.

Mahanta said the JD requested a seat. The alliance has earmarked Dibrugarh for them.

The candidates for the remaining seats will be announced on Saturday.
