5 militants killed in the valley

A civilian was injured when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian positions in the Poonch sector.

Elsewhere, security forces killed five militants during the past 24 hours.

A defence spokesman said Pak troops resorted to indiscriminate firing in Poonch on Thursday evening. Indian troops retaliated and small arms firing continued for some time.

The injured was identified as Mohammad Din, a resident of Daramsal.

At Jogwan, forces killed three militants in a fierce encounter the same evening. Two others were gunned down in Baramulla late on Thursday night.

The spokesman said militants fired upon a counterinsurgent leader, Munshi Abdul Rashid, when he was travelling in his car to Wangam bazaar in Kokernag. His personal security officer fired back, but the militants managed to escape. Munshi escaped unhurt.

In Khanmoah, unidentified militants abducted Khursheed Ahmad Malik, a civilian.

The spokesman said forces captured two militants since Thursday evening, while another surrendered.
