Congress announces candidates for three Delhi seats

In a departure from normal procedure, the Congress on Friday announced three Lok Sabha candidates from the capital, four days ahead of the formal meeting of the party's central election committee.

The candidates are Congress general secretaries R K Dhawan and Meira Kumar from the New Delhi and Karol Bagh constituencies respectively and Jaiprakash Aggarwal from the Chandni Chowk constituency.

Meira Kumar and Aggarwal represented the constituencies in the eleventh Lok Sabha.

The Congress Working Committee, which has been converted into the central election committee, is scheduled to meet from January 6 to 12 to finalise party candidates. The scrutiny committees of various states are scheduled to meet in Delhi on Saturday and on Sunday to forward names of candidates to the CEC.

On Thursday, CWC member Dr Manmohan Singh announced two candidates, R L Bhatia from Amritsar and Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder from Gurdaspur.
