After 1962 the Congress has never won this seat. Anil Basu has been winning this seat for the CPI-M since 1984, but in 1996 he was facing Monoranjan Hazra, who was the CPI-M MP from here in 1971 and who was contesting this election on the Congress ticket. Basu won by 227,000 votes.
