Barring a couple of times when it voted the Congress, the seat has remained with the Left. In 1991, Mamata Banerjee was elected from here on the Congress ticket, and retained the seat in 1996, defeating the CPI-M's Bharati Mukherjee by 104,000 votes. An interesting aspect of the 1996 election was the preponderance of woman candidates in the fray: 8 out of 13.
