After the first two elections, the constituency was represented by an Independent in the 1962 and 1967 elections. From 1971 it has remained in the custody of the CPI-M, with Renupada Das being elected four times in a row till 1984. From 1989 Ajoy Mukhopadhyay has secured this seat for the CPI-M, defeating Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya all the three times. In 1996 Mukhopadhyay won by 39,000 votes.
