Siddhartha Shankar Ray won this seat for the Congress in 1971, before he moved on to other things in life. Surprisingly, after the Janata reverse of 1977, the Congress won this seat thrice running from 1980. In 1991 it was halted by the CPI-M's Subroto Mukherjee, who won a re-election in 1996 defeating ex-Congress MP Golam Yazdani by 9,000 votes.
