Ramjilal Suman wrested the seat from the Congress for the first time in 1977 for the BLD, and after a break in 1980 and 1984 he was back in Parliament from here in 1989 as the JD candidate. Prabhu Katheria of the BJP defeated the JD in 1991, and repeated the performance in 1996 as well. Suman was in the fray on the SP ticket, and he came second, losing by 67,000 votes. Again, interestingly, the BSP, which came third, took away 83,571 votes.
