Fortunes changed here the next time round, with Mahadeepak Singh of the BJP being elected in 1989, and holding on to the seat in the next two elections as well. In 1996, Singh defeated his nearest SP rival, Ramesh Yadav, by 45,000 votes, but interestingly Kailash Yadav of the BSP took away 91,925 votes.
