Chandra Shekhar made his electoral debut from here in 1977, on the BLD ticket and won easily. In 1980, he held on to the seat, defeating Jagannath Chaudhary of the Congress, but couldn't withstand the Rajiv wave of 1984, losing to the same man. But since 1989, Shekhar has scored a hat-trick, defeating Chaudhary all the three times. In 1996, Shekhar won by 187,000 votes.
