The BJP MP from here in 1991 was Raj Narain, no relative of the earlier phenomenon by the same name. That was also the first time that the BJP had won this seat, and it remained the only time. For in 1996 the sitting MP was defeated by the SP's Subhawati Debi, by 26,000 votes. The Congress, which came fourth, got 1.42 % of the vote.
