The first two elections sent Feroze Gandhi to Parliament. And after his death, his widow Indira contested and won the seat for the first time in 1967. In 1971 it returned Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to Parliament, and threw her out in 1977, opting for Raj Narain of the BLD. The constituency made amends in 1980 to her, the runner-up being none other than Vijayaraje Scindia, then of the JP. In 1984, fought over Indira's death, her nephew Arun Nehru was elected from here. In 1989 and 1991, it stayed with the family, electing Sheila Kaul on the Congress ticket. In 1996, the BJP's Ashok Singh was elected from here, defeating the JD's Ashok Singh by 34,000 votes. The Congress got 5.29 % of the vote.
