The Jan Sangh won this seat in 1962, and it was 1989 by the time its latter-day avatar, the BJP, could win here. Rajveer Singh in fact won it for his party for two consecutive terms, before he was defeated by the SP's Kunwar Sarvraj Singh by 7,000 votes in 1996. Just 2,000 votes behind Rajveer Singh was the BSP's Chandra Pal Singh Yadav.
