S P Yadav won the constituency for the JD in 1989 and 1991, the second time despite winning just 26.2 % of the vote. In 1996, he lost to the BSP's D P Yadav, who defeated him by 5,000 votes. The BJP, which had won this seat only once in the past, in 1967 as the Jan Sangh, fielded Vijay Prakash who came third, winning 133,295 votes.
