The seat went to the DMK in the sixties, and came back to the Congress fold in 1989, courtesy Era Anbarasu, and its tie-up with the AIADMK. The seat reverted to the DMK in 1996 after 12 years, with Industry Minister Murasoli Maran defeating the Congress's G K J Bharathi by 280,000 votes.
