The Bahujan Samaj Party first opened its account here in 1989, when Harbhajan Lakha defeated the Akali Dal-Badal's Charanjit Singh. In 1992, Santosh Chaudhary from the Congress, which has won most elections from this constituency, defeated Lakha quite convincingly. In 1996, Lakha had the last laugh when he defeated the Congress's sitting MP by nearly 50,000 votes. The CPI-M's Bhagat Ram, who was elected from here in 1977 with 61 % of the vote, came third, winning 8.25 % of the vote.
