The first time the Congress won this consituency was as late as 1980, courtesy Nityananda Mishra who after retaining the seat in 1984 lost to the JD's Balgopal Mishra in 1989. The seat has since reverted to the Congress, thanks to Sarat Pattanayak. In 1996, the BJP came third, with 27.18 % of the vote, and Pattanayak's margin of victory was just 6,000 votes.
