In 1971 Vidya Charan Shukla was elected from here on the Congress ticket, defeating his Jan Sangh rival. In 1977, his dubious role during the Emergency had caught up with him, and he was defeated by the BLD. He took a break from here for some time after that, and returned in 1991, when he defeated the BJP's Ramesh Vaish. In 1996, the BJP repaid the compliment, and trounced Congress candidate Dhanender Sahu by 50,000 votes. Shuukla, embroiled in the hawala scandal was not given a ticket by his party.
