Arjun Singh territory, but the Jan Sangh has always had a presence here, even winning once in the past. In the 1989 election the BJP scored over the Congress from here, defeating the Congress. Arjun Singh then entered the fray in 1991, and wrested back the seat for his party. By 1996, Arjun Singh had been expelled from the party but he still contested on the Congress-Tiwari ticket. The Bahujan Samaj Party's Sukhlal Khushwaha bagged the seat, defeating the BJP's Virendra Saklecha. Arjun Singh himself was third in the fray, just above the official Congress candidate.
